Puff Stitch Hat

I made a puff stitch hat for my sister-in-law before Christmas, one for myself the other night, and another, using bulky yarn, for a friend of mine last night.

The first two were made of regular, medium/worsted weight yarn and I used an “I” size hook. and the third, as I mentioned, above, was a bulky-type yarn and a “J” hook. For the hats made with medium weight yarn, I used under a standard skein of yarn. For the bulky yarn hat, I couldn’t tell you, as I’d purchased that yarn in a bag of four balls in the sale bin at JoAnn. (You never know what you’ll find when you rummage through the bargain bin, right?)

For those of you that aren’t familiar with a puff stitch, the following is a good tutorial:

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain
sl st – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet

Now, here is how I did these hats:

Ch 5, attach with sl st.

Round 1: *Ch 1, puff stitch into center of chain space.* Repeat between * & * until you have six puff stitches. SC into top of first puff stitch.

Round 2: *Ch 1, Puff stitch into space between puff stitches in first round, ch1, puff stitch into that same space.* Repeat between * & * until you have 12 puff stitches. SC into top of first puff stitch.

Round 3: *Ch 1, puff stitch into next space between puff stitches in previous round, ch 1, puff stitch into next space, ch 1, puff stitch into the same space.* Repeat * & * five times, giving you 18 puff stitches. SC into top of first puff stitch.

Round 4: *Ch 1, puff stitch into next space, ch 1 puff stitch into next space, chain 1, puff stitch into next space, ch 1 puff stitch into same space.* Repeat between * & *  5 times, giving you 24 puff stitches. SC into top of first puff stitch.

Rounds 5-10: Ch 1, puff stitch in each of the spaces, 24 times. (24 puff stitches around.) SC into top of first puff stitch. (You can repeat these rows as many times as you wish if you want a longer hat.)

Round 11: SC twice into each of the 24 spaces from the previous round. Sl st to join. (48 single crochet.)

Rounds 12-15: SC into each of the previous round’s SC. Sl st to join. (48 SC.) (You can repeat these rows until the band is as wide as you like.)

At the end of your last row, slip stitch twice, end, and weave in your end.
